Public safety and individual rights should not be treated as opposing goals.
Police officers have an important responsibility to protect people from crime. They also have a responsibility to respect the rights of every person they encounter.
Protect Public Safety and Civil Rights
Residents should be able to call the police when they need help and expect a professional response.
They should also expect their constitutional rights, privacy, property, and due process to be respected.
Being investigated, questioned, stopped, or accused of something does not eliminate someone’s rights.
Accountability Builds Trust
When government exercises significant power, there must also be meaningful accountability.
Police policies should protect residents while giving officers clear standards for carrying out their responsibilities.
Mistakes and misconduct should be reviewed fairly and transparently.
My position is straightforward: government exists to protect your rights, not ignore them.
Chicago should work toward safer neighborhoods while protecting the freedoms and constitutional rights of everyone who lives here.
