Support Businesses

Strong neighborhoods need strong local businesses.

Housing growth and business growth can support each other. More residents can mean more customers for neighborhood stores, restaurants, services, and employers.

Chicago should make it easier for responsible businesses to open, invest, and grow.

Remove Unnecessary Roadblocks

Business owners should not have to navigate unnecessary delays and confusing processes simply to invest in a neighborhood.

The city should review permitting, licensing, inspections, and other requirements to identify delays that can reasonably be eliminated.

Rules should protect residents and workers without creating unnecessary barriers for businesses trying to operate responsibly.

Address Vacant Commercial Property

Commercial property owners also have a responsibility to the neighborhoods around them.

Owners should not be able to leave buildings or land in dangerous condition while waiting years for property values to increase.

Vacant commercial property should be maintained. Trash should be removed. Safety hazards should be corrected. Buildings should be properly secured when necessary.

The goal is not to punish someone simply because a property is vacant.

The goal is to make sure one neglected property does not become a safety problem or burden for every nearby resident and business.
